Diansan Su
Director, Department of Anesthesiology
The management of patients undergoing cardiothoracic and major vascular surgery represents some of the most interesting and challenging cases in anesthesiology. These patients are typically older and have complex comorbidities. Furthermore, the physiologic changes that occur, particularly during cardiac surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass, are unique.
If you are pursuing an academic career in cardiovascular and thoracic (CVT) anesthesiology, the Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship at FAHZU in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, offers excellent training and a range of opportunities.
From the moment you step foot on campus, you'll notice we care about people differently. Our firm belief that the needs of the patient come first is the foundation of a culture that unites every health care provider, scientist, student, and trainee in a singular mission to provide hope and healing to the world.
We take note of where you came from and what led you here. Everything we do is centered around mentoring you in medical research and patient care to have the impact you’ve always known you could have.
FAHZU boasts strong overall strength, exceptional medical quality and superior specialties both at home and abroad. In the “Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics of Hospitals in China” released by the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, FAHZU ranked 6th and 8 specialties got into top 10. In the latest “Performance Review of Public Hospitals in China” released by the State Council, FAHZU ranked 2nd with A++ and entered national top 1%.
1. FAHZU has around 3000+ cardiac and 13000+ non-cardiac thoracic surgical procedures each year
2. Time allotted to research in diverse areas within the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesia
3. Experience serving as both a learner and faculty co-instructor in the Multidisciplinary Simulation Center
4. Opportunities to teach medical students, anesthesiology residents, and others
5. Ability to tailor training based on interests; some fellows have sought training tailored to the cardiothoracic and vascular practices seen in the private setting; others have concentrated in echocardiography, worked on clinical or laboratory-based research projects, or focused on the congenital practice
6. A wealth of opportunities related to thoracic or major vascular surgery
The goal of our program is to prepare trainees to achieve excellence in their personal skills while becoming confident with supervision in a department committed to fostering an environment for growth.
The program provides a full-time, 2-week to 6-month training experience. In special circumstances, arrangements can be made for other lengths of training depending on your needs and interests.

After each rotation, each faculty member evaluates each fellow according to core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and system-based practice. Faculty members meet with fellows individually for verbal feedback and evaluation. For Fibroscopes and Echocardiography, technical competence is evaluated through specifically designed evaluation forms, a simulator laboratory, and through a semiannual skills assessment program. Monthly, an aggregate evaluation of a fellow's clinical progress is conducted through a clinical competency faculty committee.
The program is free of charge.
