Urology - Cystoscopy

Program Overview

Cystoscopy is the fundamental and routine diagnostic procedure in urology. However, current training programs for rotating and visiting trainees often do not include this essential skill. The Department of Urology at the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU) treats an adequate number of bladder cases, providing an excellent clinical foundation for cystoscopy skill lab. This course is a simulation-based cystoscopy training program open to ZJU international students, compensating to the routine clinical rounding.

Program Highlights

1. This course is supported by a strong department and an experienced faculty team. Leveraging the Olympus Cystoscopy Simulation Training System, it provides step-by-step training across three key dimensions: theoretical instruction, hands-on practice, and practical application. The program aims to help surgical trainees develop accurate cystoscopy observation angles and operational techniques.

2. Unlike traditional observation-based cystoscopy courses, this program dedicates substantial course time to self-directed practice sessions. It adopts a student-centered approach, with instructors serving as guides, enabling participants to acquire genuine and practical operational skills.

Training Objectives

1. Remembering: Ability to recall the anatomy and characteristics of the male and female lower urinary tract, as well as the positions of structures within the bladder.

2. Understanding: Understanding the morphology, staging, and basic principles of diagnosis and treatment for bladder tumors.

3. Applying: Applying knowledge to identify bladder pathologies, become proficient in assembling and disassembling rigid and flexible cystoscopes, and perform basic operations with endoscopic instruments.

4. Analyzing: Analyzing specific findings and structures observed during cystoscopy to diagnose diseases and develop corresponding treatment plans.

5. Evaluating: Providing feedback on operational skills and evaluating the course itself.

Program Duration

The duration of this program is usually half a day, lasting for 3-4 credit hours.
