FAHZU thoracic surgery team provides services for the surgical treatment of non-cardiac benign and malignant diseases of the chest, including the lungs, esophagus, chest wall, airway, mediastinum (the central compartment of the chest) and diaphragm Many of our therapies are performed using minimally invasive techniques such as video-assisted thoracic surgery or VATS and Robotic surgery.

The department is one of the nation's leading programs, with more than 4000 open- thoracic procedures performed each year. Our surgeons are continuously involved in clinical and basic science research and are dedicated to finding new therapies that will safely and effectively improve our patient’s quality of life. Educating and training tomorrow's cardiothoracic surgeons to be the best in every regard is one of our top priorities. We have established a stable connection with world-class societies like ESTS (European Society for Thoracic Surgery) and AATS (American Association of Thoracic Surgery), and exchange ideas with masters of thoracic surgery around the world and provide our trainees a new international experience. 

Our department consists of more than 30 physicians/surgeons and scientists, many of whom have gained national and international recognition for their clinical and/or research efforts. Our faculty members of excellence includes President, Medical Association of Zhejiang Province, General Thoracic Surgery Group (since 2019)，Committee Member of Chinese Society of Thoracic Surgery，Core Committee Member of Chinese Society of Thoracic Surgery, Robotic Surgery Group，Core Committee Member of Chinese Society of Thoracic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery Group.

We provide clinical excellence in our practice, from coronary bypass grafting, heart valve replacement, to correction of heart abnormalities in newborns, and we offer a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of lung and esophageal cancer. At our Department, every patient receives a seamless continuum of care. From exacting preoperative evaluation, intraoperative care by an outstanding team that utilizes the most sophisticated technology, to postoperative treatment that focuses on enhancing recovery, every resource is marshaled and deployed to help the patient heal faster. And the patient's doctor, at the center of it all, remains completely connected.

We are dedicated to the principles of vision, perseverance, and rigorous scientific investigation and a commitment to conduct well-conceived, cutting-edge research. The Department of Thoracic Surgery has a number of active basic, translational, and clinical research programs and owns a thoracic surgery laboratory. The Thoracic Surgery Research Lab is also currently involved in clinical trials for patients in all stages of lung and esophageal cancer. Within each of these programs there are opportunities for graduate student research, post-doctoral fellowships, resident research fellowships, and research experiences for medical students and undergraduate students.

The center undertakes the research of the "13th Five-Year Plan" national key research and development project "Construction and Application Research of Medical Endoscope Evaluation System" (project number: 2017YFC0113500), as well as 10 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China and more than 10 projects from the Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province , Zhejiang Province Key R&D Program, Zhejiang Province Major Science and Technology Special Program Projects and more than 60 various scientific research projects.
