Lung Transplantation

Overview

The Lung Transplantation Department of The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU) was established on June 1, 2016. It is an exclusive diagnosis and treatment centre for end-stage lung disease in Zhejiang Province. To date, 131 cases of lung transplantation have been completed, including 3 cases of combined heart-lung transplantation, and the number of transplants ranks third in China. Since 2019, the perioperative survival rate has reached 97%, ranking first in China. In 2017, we had completed bilateral lung transplantation for a patient who was diagnosed as "Kartegener Syndrome". This is the first case in Zhejiang Province(the second in China, and the twelfth in the world). On March 1, 2020, We had completed bilateral lung transplantation for an elderly female patient with COVID-19, which was the first lung transplantation for elderly end-stage COVID-19 patient in the world. Once more, a 70-year-old man with COVID-19 pneumonia underwent bilateral lung transplantation one week later in our centre. At present, more than 800 cases of thoracotomy are performed every year, and more than 90% of operations are thoracoscopy, including all types of thoracic surgery diseases, such as lung cancer (especially locally advanced lung cancer), oesophagal cancer, and mediastinal tumour. 


Our Team

FAHZU Lung Transplantation Department comprises 13 doctors, including three with senior titles. The lung transplantation team are composed of excellent and specialized medical staff. The main technical staff had learned cutting-edge lung transplantation technology from the Toronto General Hospital (TGH) in Canada and received personal guidance from Professor Shaf Kashavjee, a contemporary master of lung transplantation. They systematically learned the selection of lung transplant recipients, lung acquisition, the whole process of operation, postoperative monitoring, long-term follow-up and the principle of lung transplantation. They have mastered the evaluation system and standard surgical skills.


Treatments and Services

Our team perform lung transplantation for end stage lung disease. Meanwhile, more than 800 cases of thoracotomy are performed every year, and more than 90% of operations are thoracoscopy, including all types of thoracic surgery diseases, such as lung cancer (especially locally advanced lung cancer), oesophagal cancer, and mediastinal tumour.


Research & Innovation

HAN Weili, the director of Lung Transplantation Department, is the academic leader of Lung Transplantation in Zhejiang Province. He has published more than ten SCI-Indexed articles as the first or corresponding author and more than ten scientific papers in domestic core journals. He has led one project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one project of the Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province, and eight fundamental pieces of research on various chest tumours. And Dr. Han participated in the compilation of the topic of lung transplantation in Surgery and the book Clinical Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Diagnosis and Treatment Essentials. He also completed the translation of the Lung Transplantation.
