Overview

The Department of Stomatology at The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine is a key discipline in Zhejiang Province. It comprises six subspecialties: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Prosthodontics, Orthodontics, Dental Implant Center, and Oral Radiology. The department serves as a member unit of the national committees for Endodontics, Oral Mucosal Diseases, and Orthodontics, and as a standing committee member unit of the national committees for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics and Dental Implantation. Furthermore, the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery discipline is a National Clinical Key Specialty, a National Training Base for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialists, and a Key Medical Discipline of Zhejiang Province.


Currently, our department operates dental clinics and oral and maxillofacial surgery wards across all three medical campuses of the First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University.


The Dental Clinic at the Qingchun Campus features a modern, aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and spacious reception hall covering 1,000 square meters. It is equipped with 38 dental chairs, 4 special consultation rooms, and 2 dental implant rooms. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ward has 40 beds and performs nearly 2,500 surgeries annually.


The Zhijiang Campus is a hospital built with "high standards, a forward-looking vision, and international integration." The Dental Clinic is designed according to the latest international standards and incorporates an intelligent management system. It is equipped with 20 advanced dental chairs, 2 VIP consultation rooms, and 2 implant operating rooms, supported by comprehensive dental examination equipment. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ward is also constructed to the highest standards, performing nearly 1,000 surgeries annually.


The Yuhang Campus (Phase I of the headquarters) is an international general hospital. The Dental Clinic is equipped with 20 dental chairs, 5 VIP consultation rooms, and implant operating rooms. All relevant dental professional equipment and facilities meet the latest and highest standards. The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ward performs over 1,000 surgeries annually.


The Department of Stomatology at the First Affiliated Hospital emphasizes the introduction and integration of the latest domestic and international diagnostic and treatment methods, ensuring that our medical technologies align with global standards. Adhering to a "patient-centered" philosophy, the department is committed to providing high-standard, high-quality medical services to all patients.


Our Team

The department currently has 108 medical professionals, including 7 doctoral supervisors, 11 professors/chief physicians, and 16 associate professors/associate chief physicians. Among them, there are 51 individuals with medical doctorates and 20 with master's degrees. Additionally, several staff members have pursued advanced training or engaged in collaborative research in several countries such as the United States, Germany, Japan, and others.

Treatments and Services

Department of Stomatology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, serves as the designated unit for the Zhejiang Provincial Diagnosis and Treatment Center for Oral and Maxillofacial Diseases. Its medical expertise is widely recognized and praised by patients both domestically and internationally, supported by a comprehensive range of dental subspecialties.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery operates outpatient clinics and inpatient wards across all three hospital campuses. It is equipped with various advanced technologies including an intelligent surgical navigation system, water laser therapy units, and arthroscopy. The outpatient service specializes in minimally invasive and comfortable alveolar surgeries such as tooth extractions. The inpatient department focuses on surgical treatments for oral and maxillofacial diseases, with key specialties including:

1.  Radical resection and comprehensive therapy for maxillofacial tumors.

2.  Functional reconstruction of craniomaxillofacial defects.

3.  Complex and challenging implant rehabilitation following jaw reconstruction.

4.  Combined orthognathic and orthodontic treatment.

5.  Management of maxillofacial trauma.

6.  Digitally assisted functional occlusion reconstruction.

7.  Minimally invasive cosmetic surgery.

Oral Medicine encompasses a complete set of subspecialties and routinely performs procedures such as microscopic root canal therapy, integrated crown-root treatment, periodontal sequential therapy, and pulp regeneration for immature permanent teeth. The department is particularly noted for its significant efficacy in treating:

1.       Persistent fistulas and refractory pain from pulpitis and periapical periodontitis.

2.       Complex and challenging root canal treatments involving difficult canal location, calcification, or closure.

3.       Multidisciplinary combined therapy for severe periodontal diseases.

4.       Systemic management of difficult oral mucosal diseases.

5.       Endodontic treatment of dental trauma and teeth with incomplete root formation and pulp necrosis

6.       Management of extensive caries in children.

Prosthodontics is equipped with advanced devices such as the CEREC digital restoration system, digital intraoral scanners, and dental microscopes. Its specialized services include:

1.       Digitally assisted immediate fixed implant restoration in the aesthetic zone.

2.       Full-arch immediate implant functional reconstruction for patients with severe periodontitis.

3.       Fully prefabricated immediate implant functional reconstruction for edentulous jaws assisted by multimodal digital technology.

4.       CAD/CAM immediate restoration technology.

5.       Minimally invasive veneer aesthetic restoration.

6.       Full-mouth occlusal reconstruction for severe tooth wear and erosion.

7.       Prosthetic treatment for jaw defects.

8.       Multidisciplinary combined therapy for aesthetic defects.

Orthodontics is equipped with advanced instruments such as intraoral scanners, dental scanners, and Dolphin digital software. It primarily offers:

1.       Traditional fixed orthodontics.

2.       Clear aligner therapy (without brackets).

3.       Lingual orthodontics.

4.       Early preventive orthodontics for adolescents.

5.       Combined orthognathic-orthodontic treatment for adults with severe jaw deformities.

6.       Orthodontic sequential treatment for cleft lip and palate.

7.       Oral diagnosis and treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.

Dental Implant Center focuses on the following key areas:

1.  Conventional implant restoration for single or multiple missing teeth.

2.  Aesthetic implant restoration for anterior teeth.

3.  Digital implant technology, including digital guides, digital navigation, and digital restoration techniques.

4.  Minimally invasive implant techniques.

5.  Immediate implant placement and immediate restoration for edentulous patients or those with terminal dentition.

6.  Implant restoration techniques for patients with severe alveolar bone deficiency.


Research & Innovation

Over the past five years, the department has undertaken nearly 30 research projects at the national, provincial, and ministerial levels, including 6 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has published over 200 papers in domestic and international journals, 93 of which are indexed in SCI, and has authored 7 academic books.


Education & Training

The department serves as a key training center for oral medical professionals in Zhejiang Province and a postgraduate degree-awarding unit of Zhejiang University. It has developed a sound teaching system and a robust faculty team, continuously improving educational quality. With 7 doctoral supervisors and 7 master's supervisors, it has trained numerous core professionals in stomatology for Zhejiang Province and across the country, many of whom have become leading figures in their respective fields. It is acclaimed as the "Cradle of Stomatology Talents in Zhejiang Province" and functions as both a National Standardized Residency Training Base and a National Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Specialist Training Base.
