The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine

(FAHZU) was founded in 1947. Over the past 70 years, it has evolved into an internationally renowned and interdisciplinary medical center that harmonizes clinical care, education, and scientific research into a healthcare giant. FAHZU currently employs more than 10,000 faculty and staff members and has six campuses and over 5,000 patient beds.


As one of the top-ranked hospitals in China, FAHZU consists of multiple centers with excellence, such as organ transplantation, pancreatic diseases, infectious diseases, hematology, nephrology, urology, and clinical pharmacy. The organ transplantation center, for instance, covers the replacement of pancreas, liver, kidney, heart, lung, and small bowel transplants. Over 6,300 kidney and 2,800 liver transplants have been performed since the launch of the programs in 1977 and 1993, respectively. To date, the number of living related small bowel transplantation (LR-SBTx) tops the world. Another world-renowned top-notch center of FAHZU is the infectious diseases center. In the fight against SARS, H7N9 avian flu and more recently COVID-19 pandemic, FAHZU has made major achievements and great impact to the field represented by multiple research articles published in prestigious journals, including New England Journal of Medicine, the Lancet, Nature, and Science. 


FAHZU emphasizes on medical education and research. Many resident and fellow doctors trained in FAHZU have become the leaders across China. Our physicians and scientists have conducted outstanding medical research and competed successfully for the funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Science and Technology Major Projects, and National Key R&D Programs, with annual research funding exceeding 28 million USD for the last six consecutive years. Accordingly, FAHZU has provided many lines of state-of-the-art equipment for the research at FAHZU, including two-photon confocal microscopy, small animal in vivo PET imaging, mass-spec and cytometry profiling systems.


Last but not least, FAHZU is actively collaborating with international medical communities and has established partnerships with over 30 prestigious universities and medical institutions around the world, including Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University. Multiple exchange programs among the institutes are also in place.
