Nursing work in our hospital has been in a leading position in China since the hospital was founded on November 1, 1947. The concept of humanistic nursing is rooted in the heart of every nurse. In order to keep step with the development of modern medicine, our hospital has its own excellent nursing team matching the scale of the hospital, due to the efforts of successive hospital managers, especially in the fields of critical care, organ transplantation care, emergency care, artificial liver care and blood purification care, which have been at the forefront of nursing in China.
The nurse quality control center of Zhejiang Province and the Nursing Management Commission have been based in our hospital since 1991, and in 2010 the chairmanship of the commission was undertaken by our hospital. The postgraduate nursing education of Zhejiang University and the specialist nurse training for adult ICU, emergency treatment and organ transplantation take place in our hospital. Our hospital is also the teaching and training base for 16 universities and colleges. We focus on nursing standards and on training many nurses for clinical work.
With the vigorous development of the hospital, the nursing team is growing quickly. The hospital has 2500 beds. As of August 2012, we have more than 2000 nurses, of whom 65.6% have bachelor degrees, seven have master's degrees and one nurse has doctor's degree.
Our hospital has a comprehensive and scientific quality control system for nursing. We have built three degree-quality evaluation systems for nurses based on reliability, validity, and weight coefficients. We also have founded an indicators group, a mathematical model and software which are suitable for nurses. We have combined process management and terminal management, step management and self-management. We have achieved quality control through the idea of helping.
Based on the digital platform of the hospital, the nursing department has developed intelligent care management software, electronic medical care records and research and clinical care paths. We have also developed many standards for operations and processes, like the nurses work system. Patients are identified by a bar code on their wrist and the principle of no injury is emphasized in all parts of nursing work.
Excellence in nursing work started in the experimental department and has been promoted across the whole hospital. We combine nurses with overall responsibility with specialist nurses to adapt to the needs of patients. Patient satisfaction is continuously improved and we were honored as one of the National Outstanding nurse units. As one of 23 experimental hospitals for nurses' job management, we have achieved performance management through job surveys, job analysis, job evaluation, job training and so on.
We have focused on continuous quality improvement, the use of management tools (FOCUS-PDCA, quality circle, clinical pathway, 5S management and RCA), and failure of the application of modeling tools to achieve standardized and scientific management.
Adverse events should be autonomously reported and analyzed by systemic ideas. The reporting system was designed in accordance with the RCA principle to minimize the occurrence of adverse events.

We have also paid much attention to the development of nursing culture. We help the nurse to establish a nursing philosophy of "dedication, innovation, understanding, caring and equality". We have founded a magazine called "Spring of the Guardian", which provides a platform for dynamic information exchange.
We have focused on the professional development of nurses. Based on each nurse's personal ability, hospitals train them to become clinical nurse specialists, nurse specialists, or nursing education specialists and so on, providing a platform for the nurse to achieve self-worth.

Nursing Philosophy
Nursing is the science of caring and human kindness. It is an integrated subject which combines natural sciences and humanities. Through a quantum leap in the understanding of "natural persons" to "social persons", nursing encompasses biology, psychology, literature and sociology.

We believe that:

1. Humans are both independent and interdependent beings with united physical, psychological, social, cultural and spiritual aspects. Each person needs caring from others, and caring between people can contribute to the pursuit of health and to personal growth and self-worth.
2. Environment refers to all the intrinsic and extrinsic factors which affect human development and behavior. When nurses help patients adapt to the environment, they should consider the complexity and uniqueness of different patients.
3. Every patient has the right to understand their health situation, and the right to participate in decisions related to their health, which should be respected.
4. Health means not only being without physical disorders, but also maintaining a stable mental state and having good social adaptability and good interpersonal skills. The responsibilities of the nurse are to help patients maintain the best level of health through health education and providing personal, family and social help.
5. Nursing is patient-centered care. The patient comes first. Problems are solved through ongoing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing process.
6. Nurses should collaborate with other professionals to provide quality health services.
7. Nurses should be responsible for patients, their families, hospitals, nursing professionals and society.
8. Nurses have the responsibility to keep on learning to enhance professional knowledge and skills to promote personal development.
9. Nursing, education and research should be globally interactive.
