Respiratory Medicine

Overview

FAHZU Respiratory Medicine Department was set up in November 1947, as the first respiratory ward in Zhejiang Province. Currently, our department consists of 154 beds and includes a respiratory intensive care unit, lung function rooms, bronchoscopy rooms, sleep apnea monitoring rooms, the asthma center, lung cancer center and a respiratory laboratory. The Department of Respiratory Medicine provides Master’s and Doctoral Courses of Zhejiang University and maintains an active program of clinical research, and education activities. It has been a regional center for respiratory specialty and ranked as the fifth for pulmonology in 2016 by Chinese Academy of Sciences.


Our Team

There are 41 physicians in the department of whom 80% staff holds doctorate and 25 senior titles, 2 doctoral supervisors, 5 master supervisors. The department provides primary care and consultation in respiratory medicine for more than 5,000 inpatients and 60,000 outpatients every year. We are always committed to finding treatments and cures to improve the lives of patients with respiratory diseases.

Endobronchial ultrasound bronchoscopes

CT-guided percutaneous lung biopsy

Radial and convex EBUS combined with virtual navigation system

Bronchus thermoplasty

Additionally, The Lung Cancer Center provides a multidiscipline platform for the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancers. We have participated in a variety of international multicenter clinical trials including targeted drugs, immune agents, bronchodilators, and antibiotics. 


Research & Innovation

Fellows and other researchers in this department are engaged in multiple active research programs and cooperated with top labs around China. Our department has a major focus of interests in pathophysiology of asthma and obstructive pulmonary diseases, mechanisms of P. aeruginosa resistance, and development of lung cancer drugs. More than 150 master and doctor medical students have received degrees under our programs. We received more than 50 funding including National Natural Science Foundation grants and Natural Science Foundation of Zhejiang Province, and published more than 60 research papers some of them in top journals including American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Journal of Immunology, Chest, Cancer Letter as the first or corresponding author.


Education & Training

The department of Respiratory Medicine is dedicated to medical student education and provides continuing medical education for physicians. Since 1947, more than 1000 physicians have received medical trainings and some of them have become the directors of hospitals around Zhejiang Province. We also have organized 22 national CME classes, which dramatically improved the knowledge of professionals in the area of respiratory medicine.


Honors & Awards

The Department of Respiratory Medicine is the earliest specialized ward of respiratory medicine in Zhejiang Province. It is a national key clinical specialty of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, a Provincial key medical specialty, and the first batch of standardized respiratory and critical care medicine (PCCM), the largest specialist training base in respiratory diseases in Zhejiang Province, and a leading discipline in the field of respiratory medicine in Zhejiang Province.
