Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound Center

Overview

Echocardiography and Vascular Ultrasound Center ranks as the largest echocardiography and vascular ultrasound academic center in Zhejiang Province. It ranks 13th in the best specialty reputation ranking of Chinese hospitals within ultrasonic medicine. Our center has 33 best ultrasound instruments (12 on Qingchun campus and 21 on Zhijiang campus) and serves more than 1800 patients each day. The examination programs we provide almost cover fetal heart, pediatric heart, adult heart, intraoperative and bedside heart examination, and systemic macrovascular ultrasound examination. All senior experts in the department have rich clinical experience, especially in the field of ultrasonic diagnosis of heart difficult cases enjoy a high reputation. The department participated in the compilation of “Chinese cardiac ultrasonic contrast”, “Chinese EXPERT consensus on TEE”, and “Chinese cardiac ultrasonic consensus on cardio-oncology”. The department also led the formulation of “Mitral regurgitation evaluation guidelines of Zhejiang Province”, “Aortic valve regurgitation guidelines of Zhejiang Province” and “Echocardiography evaluation guidelines of left ventricular diastolic function of Zhejiang Province”. At the same time, the department actively participated in the innovation and guarantee work of new clinical technologies and new projects, such as intraoperative TEE in lung transplantation of patients with new coronaviruses, monitoring of heart transplantation, preoperative and postoperative evaluation of transcatheter and trans-apical TAVI, and monitoring of all kinds of transcatheter operation. In the fight against COVID-19, our department undertook the ultrasound work for severe COVID-19 patients in Zhejiang province, and established more than 10 temporary dedicated ultrasound rooms. A total of 11 doctors entered the isolation ward to fight against the disease, so as to achieve zero death of patients and zero infection of medical staff, making due contributions to the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 in Zhejiang Province.

Our Team

The department comprises 30 medical staff, including 3 senior physicians, 2 associate senior physicians and 10 intermediate titles. We have 4 medical doctors, 2 doctoral students, 2 master supervisors and 13 masters.

Professor Zhe-lan Zheng, M.D., graduated from Keele University in Germany, is the current director of the department. Professor Zhe-lan Zheng is the national committee member of the Chinese Medical Association of Ultrasound, the standing committee member of Zhejiang Medical Association of Ultrasound, the head of echocardiography, the national council member of the Chinese Society of Ultrasonic Medical Engineering, the standing council member of the Chinese Society of Echocardiography, the Vice Chairman of the youth committee of the Zhejiang Medical Association of Ultrasound. Editorial board member of Chinese Journal of Ultrasound Imaging, Editorial Board member of Shanghai Journal of Medical Imaging, editorial Board member of Chinese Journal of Medical Ultrasound imaging (electronic edition). Professor Zhe-lan Zheng and the team firstly put forward the new standard of ultrasonic diagnoses nutcracker phenomenon with consistent agreement in 2004.

Treatments and Services

Our center is the first department to carry out cardiovascular ultrasonic diagnosis in Zhejiang province. The level of diagnosis on cardiovascular diseases is advanced in China. The examination project almost covers fetal heart, pediatric heart, adult heart and systemic macro-vessels. Ultrasonic diagnosis of heart disease is a traditional advantage item in the department, including refined diagnosis of heart valvular disease, ultrasonic diagnosis of congenital heart disease, multimodal and multidirectional evaluation of heart function, ultrasonic evaluation of abdominal macro-vessels, and ultrasonic evaluation of transplanted organs. At present, new technologies and projects for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases are carried out comprehensively, such as preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative monitoring of valvular diseases, congenital heart diseases and cardiac tumors by intraoperative transesophageal ultrasound, and ultrasound examination and evaluation of cerebral carotid artery and limb vascular diseases.

Research & Innovation

Our center participates in several national multicenter studies, including programs of valvular disease, heart disease associated with tumor chemotherapy, evaluation of left diastolic function and cardiac hypertrophy. For example, we study about early diagnosis of coronary heart disease using new ultrasonic techniques, evaluation of myocardial perfusion and myocardial movement. Additionally, the application of real-time three-dimensional echocardiography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound in the diagnosis and treatment of heart and vascular diseases is also practiced in our center. It has been awarded one National Natural Science Foundation project, two natural science Foundation projects of Zhejiang Province, one major fund project of Zhejiang Province, and two general fund projects of Zhejiang Province with the second prize of Science and technology of Zhejiang Province.

Education & Training

The center is one of the earliest units to carry out national continuing education programs in China. It has hosted national ultrasound continuing education programs for 20 years and trained more than 1,000 doctors. At the same time, the center undertakes the English teaching of ultrasonic courses for overseas students in Zhejiang University, the teaching of eight-year and seven-year undergraduate students in Zhejiang University, as well as the training of a large number of ultrasonic resident doctors, and has trained more than 50 postgraduate students.
