Lung Transplantation

Overview

The Department of Lung Transplantation of FAHZU was established on June 1, 2016. It is an exclusive diagnosis and treatment centre for end-stage lung disease in Zhejiang Province. In 2016, we had completed five cases of lung transplant within six months. By the end of 2019, 56 cases of lung transplantation have been completed, including 1 case of heart-lung transplantation, and the number of transplants ranks fifth in China. Especially in 2019, no lung transplant recipients die during the perioperative period, which is at the pinnacle level in the world. In 2017, we had completed bilateral lung transplantation for a patient who was diagnosed as "Kartegener Syndrome". This is the first case in Zhejiang Province(the second in China, and the twelfth in the world). On March 1, 2020, we had completed bilateral lung transplantation for an elderly female patient with COVID-19 pneumonia, which was the first lung transplantation for elderly end-stage COVID-19 patients in the world. Once more, a 70-year-old man with COVID-19 pneumonia underwent bilateral lung transplantation one week later in our centre. At present, more than 800 cases of thoracotomy were performed every year, and more than 90% of operations were thoracoscopy, including all types of thoracic surgery diseases, such as lung cancer (especially locally advanced lung cancer), oesophagal cancer, and mediastinal tumour.

Our Team

There are 13 doctors work in the lung transplantation department, including three senior titles. The lung transplant team are composed of excellent and specialized medical staffs. The main technical staffs studied lung transplantation technology at the Toronto General Hospital (TGH) in Canada and received personal guidance from Professor Shaf Kashavjee, a contemporary master of lung transplantation. They systematically learned the selection of lung transplant recipients, lung acquisition, the whole process of operation, postoperative monitoring, long-term follow-up and the principle of lung transplantation. They have mastered the evaluation system and standard surgical skills.
